As with all dogs, Newfoundlands may have health problems. The most common are subvalvular aortic stenosis, hip and/or elbow dysplasia, cystinuria, cruciate injuries, skin problems and ear infections.

The breed originated in Newfoundland aiding the fisherman by pulling nets, carting fish to market, pulling heavy equipment and often being used as a lifesaver of people in the water. The Newfoundland is a dog of courage, loyalty and devotion. The Newfoundland can be found today in many working venues. The Newf excels in water rescue, drafting, obedience, agility and therapy work. The Newfoundland is a versatile breed.
Often referred to as "gentle giants", their sweet nature and wonderful disposition makes them excellent family pets.

How much do Newfs shed? They are a double coated breed and shed year round.
How big is a Newfoundland? The males tend to be a bit bigger than the females. The average weight for a male is 140 lbs and for a female 120 lbs. Bigger does NOT make a Newf better.
Do Newfs naturally know how to swim? While most Newfoundlands are natural swimmers some Newfoundlands need help learning to swim. And some Newfs don't like water at all.
