"The Newfoundland is a sweet-dispositioned dog that acts neither dull nor ill-tempered. He is a devoted companion. A multipurpose dog, at home on land and in water, the Newfoundland is capable of draft work and possesses natural lifesaving abilities. The Newfoundland is a large, heavily coated, well balanced dog that is deep-bodied, heavily boned, muscular, and strong. A good specimen of the breed has dignity and proud head carriage. "

"Sweetness of temperament is the hallmark of the Newfoundland; this is the most important single characteristic of the breed"

As with all dogs, Newfoundlands may have health problems. The most common are subvalvular aortic stenosis, hip and/or elbow dysplasia, cystinuria, cruciate injuries, skin problems and ear infections.

The Newfoundland is a working dog.  The breed originated in Newfoundland aiding the fisherman by pulling nets, carting fish to market, pulling heavy equipment and often being used as a lifesaver of people in the water.  The Newfoundland is a dog of courage, loyalty and devotion.  The Newfoundland can be found today in many working venues.  The Newf excels in water rescue, drafting, obedience, agility and therapy work.  The Newfoundland is a versatile breed.

Often referred to as "gentle giants", their sweet nature and wonderful disposition makes them excellent family pets.

FAMOUS NEWFOUNDLAND OWNERS

Frequently Asked Questions

Do Newfoundlands drool?  Yes, some more than others

How much do Newfs shed?  They are a double coated breed and shed year round.

How big is a Newfoundland?  The males tend to be a bit bigger than the females.  The average weight for a male is 140 lbs and for a female 120 lbs.  Bigger does NOT make a Newf better.

Do Newfs naturally know how to swim?  While most Newfoundlands are natural swimmers some Newfoundlands need help learning to swim.  And some Newfs don't like water at all.
