Summer’s Here! Time To Get WET!

Ready to get started with your (future) water rescue dog?  Come for a fun-filled weekend – learn the training and handling skills you will need to train your dog for an NCA water work title.  During this activity-filled workshop, participants will train and be trained in the skills needed by handler and dog to pass an NCA Water Test.  Practice equipment and handouts will be provided. To accommodate different needs and skill levels, Saturday’s session will be specifically geared for beginners; Sunday’s session is for those planning on a test this year. Training will apply to dogs of all ages.

Saturday, June 21 and Sunday, June 22

Location: Private swimming pond at the home of Darrell and Rochelle Geldhof

5894 Palms Road, Casco, MI (near Marine City in St. Clair County)

Instructor: Lawren Coulam

Saturday (10:00 AM to 4:00 PM with a lunch break) will focus on the beginner - handler or dog. Basic skills needed by both the dog and handler will be taught. You and your dog will be in and out of the water all day - come energized!  A copy and knowledge of the NCA Water Test Regulations is highly recommended.

Sunday (10:00 AM to 4:00 PM with a lunch break) will be geared for those who plan on entering a test this summer.  While exercises at all three levels - WD, WRD, and WRDX - will be taught, your focus will be at your dog’s current level to solidify what your dog already knows, and going on from there.  Problem avoiding will be emphasized, but problem solving is part of training.

Items to bring: your future "Water Rescue Dog"; crate; water for your dog; comfortable clothing that can get wet; a life jacket for yourself; shoes that can be worn in the water; lawn chair; small bits of cheese, liver, or non-crunchy treats for your dog; lunch, drinks and snacks for yourself. In addition, canvas training dummies ($6.00) will be available for purchase, if you need one.

Overnight camping is permitted on the training site. There are no hookups. A port-a-john is available.
